“NYS 10-10-10” Ski Program Wins Excellence Award for Tourism Promotion

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. — The Empire State Development Division of Tourism, which administers the I LOVE NY program, was a co-recipient along with Ski Areas of New York, Inc. (SANY) and the Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA) of the 2013 Tourism Excellence Award for Tourism Promotion at the 7th Annual I LOVE NEW YORK Empire State Tourism Conference held at the Conference & Events Center in Niagara Falls on May 2nd. The co-recipients were selected by an independent judging panel of the New York State Travel & Vacation Association (NYSTVA, conference co-host), in recognition of their collaborative “NYS 10-10-10” program to promote skiing in New York State. Titus Mountain Family Ski Center Sweetens The Pot!

As winter turns to spring, most North American ski resorts seek creative ways to keep visitors coming to their mountains. Titus Mountain Family Ski Center, located in northern New York State, is no exception. For inspiration, they only needed to look just across the Canadian border into the province of Quebec.

Quebec produces over 70% of the world’s maple syrup and the province has many maple producers . . . a number of whom are located at Quebec ski areas. Dene Savage, Titus Mountain Marketing Director, explains: “Ski areas in the northeastern U.S. & eastern Canada typically have large populations of beautiful sugar maples. They’re really one of the most common trees found on the lower elevations of most mountains. If you want to make maple syrup, it’s good to go where the trees are . . . and ski areas can be extra-good, with well-drained soil and a slope to facilitate the sap collection process.”

Greek Peak Mountain Resort Honored with Annual Golden Eagle Environmental Award

Projects Include Clean Energy Use, Green Building, Forest Restoration Cortland, NY- May 8, 2013 - The National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) presented Greek Peak Mountain Resort along with six other ski areas with the 2013 Golden Eagle Awards for Environmental Excellence including California's Homewood Mountain Resort, Utah's Alta, Brighton, Snowbird and Solitude ski areas, and Vermont's Killington Resort. The annual Golden Eagle Awards, now in its 20th year, are the ski industry's most prestigious award for recognizing ski area environmental programs and projects. Awards are given based on three ski area size categories (up to 200,000 annual skier and snowboarder visits; 200,000 - 500,000 visits; and more than 500,000 visits). Read more...

Hunter Mountain Mourns the Loss of Beloved Co-Founder Orville A. Slutzky February 13, 1917 - April 18, 2013 Hunter, NY – Orville A. Slutzky, age 96, the beloved co-founder of Hunter Mountain, passed away peacefully on April 18, 2013, in the company of loved ones. Orville was born in Hunter on February 13, 1917 and raised on his parents’ farm in Jewett, NY. The son of the late Isaac and Ella (Miller) Slutzky, he is survived by three children (Carol Slutzky-Tenerowicz, Paul Slutzky and Gary Slutzky), in addition to numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Holiday Valley Announces $3.1 Improvement Projects
